Preach on, @DrunkenMartina.

Update: Add Staind to the list. My boyfriend is going to die when he hears that.

Sometimes social media can be an odd and interesting (and wonderful, of course) space to be in. It’s not quite public relations, it’s not quite web design, it’s not quite marketing, it’s not quite advertising and, despite the name, it’s not quite media.

If you’re in the field, you’ve no doubt seen the Pied Pipers who proclaim to be gurus/ninjas/experts/etc. As if one outside person can bill you an hourly fee and successfully accomplish what social media is, at its roots, all about: community and communication that satisfies your customers or target audiences. If you’ve looked at the possibility of utilizing outside help or hiring an internal social media manager, you’ve probably come across people who use a combination of capital letters and exclamation points to drive home JUST HOW MUCH THEY KNOW!!!

To that end, this video is especially entertaining (hat tip to Jeff Cohen for the discovery):

So let me amend this blog post’s title – I’m Karlie, a student of social media who believes that, when used correctly and consistently, the medium can serve as an extension of customer service, media relations, SEO and community building all in one.

End of the week inspiration

I had already met Waylon, through a curious process. He wanted to talk to me because of a negative review I had written about his 1972 album Ladies Love Outlaws. It sounded unfinished to me, and that’s what I wrote in the pages of Rolling Stone — which I didn’t realize he read. So, one day I’m in my apartment in Austin and the phone rings. It’s Nashville calling and a voice saying, “Please hold for Waylon Jennings.” I was fairly apprehensive, I tell you. Waylon came on the line. “Hoss,” he said, “I just wanted to tell you what you wrote about that album is the truth, and I appreciate that.” He went on to tell me that he had not, in fact, finished the album and that RCA released it without his permission when he was hospitalized with hepatitis. He ended up by saying, “C’mon and ride the bus with us.” Chet Flippo, “Willie & Waylon and the Outlaw Thing, via CMT Skyline.

This is an old article, but a good one nonetheless if you’ve ever wondered about the marketing behind the Outlaw music movement of the seventies.

Also, note to self: Add “hoss” to daily vocabulary.

What: Pink tassled J.Crew tunic with sequins and beading.

Scored for: $8 at J.Crew – all of the sale merchandise is an extra 20% off, and it’s a pretty big section. I’ll also be stopping by the J.Crew Clearance Center in Asheville this weekend, so hopefully this is just a sign of what’s to come…

I remember back in high school, my friend won the local beauty pagent and received a gift card to spend at Ann Taylor to beef up her “pageant wardrobe.” I also remember wondering how to ask my friend why they were making her wear old people clothes. (I think I finally came up with “Why are they making you wear old people clothes?”)

Well, color me old, because I’m loving Ann Taylor LOFT’s line right now – especially since all sale items are 50% off and all regularly priced items are 40% off.

A few if my favorites:

1. Ruffle Collar Dress

2. Asymetrical Ruffle Button Down Shirt

3. Strapless Beaded Dress

4. Silk Ruffled Dress
