I was so jazzed to be included in last year’s annual Nashville Scene Country Music Critics poll, and equally so this year. It’s pretty cool to be lumped into a group that includes writers at Billboard, All Things Considered, American Songwriter, The Wall Street Journal and People. (Yes, I just included People magazine in with that list. Carrie Underwood’s leg workout is NEWS, people.)

I found this chair at a Goodwill in Myrtle Beach, S.C. close to three years ago. It was low on price and high on potential, but I didn’t get around to doing anything about it ’til just the other day. Black paint, a fieldtrip to the upholsterer for the cushion and a leopard bolster pillow, and all is well.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, y’all. The Great Gift Hunt of 2011 began and ended on Sunday, a testament to how busy things have been around here. But things have quickly come together before our mountain and Texas adventures begin this weekend and bleed into the new year.

I’ve been looking for a gold bamboo bookshelf to line with all of the shoes you see below. Preferably one that didn’t cost five million dollars. And that’s the funny thing about thrift stores – sometimes a twist on just what you’re looking for shows up just like that. Only smaller. And in the form of a side table. And for $8.

I’ll take it! And yes, that is a one, two, three punch of Emily Giffin, Nina Garcia and Lauren Conrad books there. Don’t judge me.

My Black Friday involved a 2-hour line outside the J.Crew warehouse sample sale – and it was worth every minute in the cold mountain air. Some of those minutes hours were spent perusing the store’s latest catalog.

A coat, three pairs of shoes and a sweater later, I came across Refinery 29′s J.Crew catalog styling tips. Bingo.
